Jobless Rate Holds Steady

After three straight months of decline, the London-St. Thomas unemployment rate was unchanged in July.

According to Statistics Canada, it was 7.4% last month, unchanged from June.  The jobless rate held steady, despite 2,200 people in the area finding work.

Nationally, the rate fell to 7% from June’s 7.1%, while the Ontario unemployment rate was 7.4%. It was 7.5% in June.

Statistics Canada says employment in educational services and in information, culture and recreation rose in July.

The agency also says there were fewer people working in construction, health care and social assistance.

Most of the employment gains were concentrated among people between the ages of 15 and 24, while there were losses among people aged 55 and older.
