Winter Storm And Crashes Fatigue OPP

It should come as no surprise that OPP were very busy during the thick of a powerful blasting of snow, ice and wind earlier this week.

But just how busy is now coming to light.

Elgin OPP say between Wednesday and Thursday they were called to more than 50 crashes and other weather related incidents, as vehicles slid into ditches, snow banks and other vehicles.

In Lambton, the calls for help were even higher with officers responding to 75 traffic-related incidents.

Throughout the two days, Hwy. 401 was closed in various sections from Chatham, to Woodstock, to Waterloo due to serious multi-vehicle collisions. Injuries were all non-life threatening.

There was one fatality in Oxford. 29-year-old Cornelius Thiessen of Aylmer was killed after a van and tractor trailer collided on the 19th Line in Zorra Township, just outside St. Marys.

The cause of that crash has not been released.
