An allegation this morning that London Mayor Joe Fontana used government funds to pay for his son’s 2005 wedding reception.
The London Free Press reports the Mayor, then an MP and Minister for Labour and Housing, used federal government-issued cheques for $1700 and $18,900 dollars to put a deposit on the Marconi Club and months later, settle the bill.
The club’s former manager tells the paper Fontana negotiated a $1,000 discount on his bill and eventually paid it with the government cheque.
The Free Press also reports the RCMP questioned at least two Londoners about the Marconi bill last week.
The paper also claims an anonymous source has told them Fontana made the requests for the cheques through his MP’s office.
Fontana didn’t respond to the paper’s requests for comment but tells CTV London he knows nothing about the payments adding “it was seven-and-a-half years ago.”
These allegations have not been proven.
