Fifth St. Bridge Completion Pushed Back Six Months

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has some disappointing news for drivers who were hoping to take the Fifth St. bridge in Chatham this winter.

A release from the municipality says "due to unforeseen construction delays," the bridge will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic until June 2018. It was originally supposed to re-open by December 22, 2017.

The release says the delays resulted from both the demolition and some design changes that took place after the demolition was finished.

Crews attempted to speed things up, but they weren't able to get back on schedule and winter weather conditions will force the construction to shut down in January. Work will start up again "once weather conditions allow."

The municipality says it is currently "exploring all its options to ensure completion provisions of the contract are enforced" adding that the Engineering and Transportation Division "appreciates the patience and consideration of Chatham-Kent residents" while the project is completed.
