Police Briefs – Tuesday, January 10, 2017

A diesel spill closed the westbound lanes of Hwy. 401 near Mull Rd. in Chatham-Kent for several hours.

The OPP say a tractor trailer struck an object on the highway around 11 am Monday morning, causing one of their fuel tanks to rupture.

Approximately 400 L of diesel fuel spilled onto the highway, forcing police to close the road while crews from the Ministry of Environment cleaned it up.

Police are looking for suspects after someone forced their way into a Chatham business and tried to steal the till.

Around 4:45am Tuesday morning, someone damaged the front door of the Highland Laundry and Dry Cleaner on St. Clair St.

Once inside they tried to steal the till but were unsuccessful.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

The Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) squad helped take a Chatham man into custody.

The 31-year-old was arrested just before 4pm yesterday afternoon and turned over Chatham-Kent police.

The suspect was transported to the Windsor Detention Centre.
