Police Briefs – Sunday, January 8, 2017

A Chatham woman had quite the scare when she found an unknown man in her home early Sunday morning.

Police say around 2:20am, at a residence on Sussex St. in Chatham, a woman heard a noise coming from her kitchen. When she went to have a look, she reportedly saw a male with a dark hood.

Once the man saw her, he fled the area. Officers have been unable to find the man.

Nothing has been reported stolen.

A 26-year-old Chatham woman has been arrested for allegedly stealing from a local variety store.

Chatham-Kent police say on January 4, video surveillance shows a woman putting about $40 worth of items into her purse at a store on Grand Ave. in Chatham.

On Saturday night police found the woman at a residence on Emma St. in Chatham.

She has been arrested and charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property.

A 27-year-old Chatham man is facing charges following an alleged theft at a bar.

Police say the man went to a bar in Chatham on January 4. While there he allegedly took a wallet that a woman had put down on the bar, containing $300 in cash and several pieces of ID.

Once police identified the man they noticed he had been bound by a recognizance. Police say the man should not have been outside his home between 11pm and 6am.

As a result, the Chatham man was arrested Saturday night. He has since been charged with theft under $5,000 and failing to comply with recognizance.
