Dresden ready for home opener

The Dresden Kings take on the Petrolia Flyers Friday in their home opener in the Provincial Junior Hockey League.

Head coach Rob Vanderydt believes they're ready for a good season.

"We've got our expectations just like everybody at this time of year. It's a brand new year and everybody's pretty excited about their team. We believe we are going to be pretty competitive, and we're just going to try to take it one month at a time, and got from there," he said.

But Vanderydt says if they want to have any success this season, they need to work on their defence.

"Last year we had some success, we had an offensive team, but we definitely have to work on our defensive play and our coverage because there are so many teams that can score in this league," he said. "It's going to be a very competitive league and we're looking forward to it."

Rob Vanderydt is entering his fourth season as head coach, and says the consistency helps.

The Kings won their season opener on Wednesday, doubling up the Sharks, 4-2 in Wheatley.

Puck drop for Friday's game is set for 7:30 p.m. in Dresden.
