Maroons Win 4th Straight, 5-3 Over Strathroy

Grant Spence scored twice in the second period as the Chatham Maroons beat the Rockets 5-3 in Strathroy Saturday night.

It was the fourth victory in a row for the Maroons. They sit in a fourth-place tie with LaSalle in the GOJHL Western Conference standings. The Rockets are tied for eighth with St. Marys with 12 points.

The Maroons got on the board first almost right away, when Bryce Yetman found the net at 1:58 into the first frame. Chatham also had two power plays in the first, including a head contact situation which resulted in Strathroy's Hunter Monkhouse receiving a misconduct.

Chatham blew the game wide open in the second period with four unanswered goals. Eric Carter doubled the lead to 2-0 at 1:35 in the period and Steven Fowler's power play goal soon provided insurance for the Maroons. Spence then scored back-to-back goals, one of them on the power play, to give the Maroons a 5-0 lead at second intermission.

Spence says it was one of those periods where everything just clicked.

"We just got a lot of shots on net, we played better defensively, and then offensively we had some good passes and some good finishes too," says Spence.

The Rockets made the game interesting in the third period when they scored three unanswered goals, from Andrew Bugeja, Tristan Sedlak and Spencer Allen in order.

Ryan Wagner stopped 33 Strathroy shots between the pipes for Chatham. Joshua Diamond took the loss in goal for the Rockets, with 38 saves.

With St. Thomas coming to Chatham Memorial Arena Sunday, Spence says they hope to keep the momentum going.

"Playing back-to-back Sundays is definitely tough," says Spence. "We just hope we can get the five straight wins and start rolling along. And I think if we play well we should be able get the win."

Puck drop against the Stars is 7pm.
