Maroons Honoured At Year-End Banquet

Veteran players stole the spotlight as the Chatham Maroons held their annual awards banquet over the weekend.

The team handed out its season awards Saturday during the event in Tilbury.

Steven Beenackers, a veteran presence for the Maroons, was named the team's Most Valuable Player for the 2016-17 season.  Beenackers, who was the team's captain, scored 19 goals for a total of 40 points.  He added two more goals and two more assists in the playoffs.

Beenackers also won the Roy Bruhlman Memorial Award as the most valuable senior player and the CMHA Outstanding Graduate award.

Other players winning multiple awards include Alec Mackenzie, who won the year's award for the most desire and determination, the Jim Torrie Award for leadership and sportsmanship, and the George Aitkens Award for the most dedicated player to the Maroons.  Rookie Kevin Gursoy picked up prizes for rookie of the year, top scorer in the playoffs, and the Ron Coristine Award for secondary school academic achievement.

More award recipients include Nolan VandenBoorn, who won the Barry Wiseman Memorial Award for post-secondary academics, Braden Henderson was named defenceman of the year, and Blair Derynck won the award for the season's most developed player.  Brendan D'Agostino, a midseason acquisition for the Maroons, was named as the player with the most desire and determination in the playoffs.
