Maroons Top Legionnaires 7-5

Austin Thompson and Nolan VandenBoorn led the Chatham Maroons to a 7-5 victory over the Sarnia Legionnaires on Thursday.

The Legionnaires took a 2-0 advantage early in the first period, but VandenBoorn scored in the second part of the frame to cut the lead in half.

Braden Henderson tied the game for Chatham with a goal 1:07 into the second, but Sarnia retook the lead with a goal two minutes later. Thompson scored shortly after, followed by VandenBoorn who scored his second of the night 10:52 in the second.  Thompson then scored his second of the game to make it 5-3 for Chatham.

Sarnia netted one more goal before the third and then added another early in the third to tie the game at 5-5 with less than 15 minutes left to play. Josh King and Kevin Gursoy followed up with two unanswered goals to put Chatham in the lead for the win.

Chatham also outshot Sarnia 42-39.

The Maroons travel to St. Marys on Friday to take on the Lincolns at 7:30pm.
