Sports Briefs - September 28, 2016

The Blue Jays gained some ground in their push for a playoff spot with a big win over Baltimore Tuesday night. Aaron Sanchez struck out 10 batters as Toronto beat the Orioles 5-1 to move two games up on Baltimore for the top wild card spot in the American League.

Meanwhile -- the Detroit Tigers are now just one game back of the Orioles for the second AL wild card after blanking Cleveland 12-0. Justin Verlander picked up his 16th victory for Detroit, scattering four hits and posting 12 strikeouts.

Team Canada took Game 1 of the World Cup of Hockey final. Carey Price made 32 saves and the top line of Sidney Crosby, Brad Marchand, and Patrice Bergeron combined for two goals and four assists as Canada edged Europe 3-1. Canada can win the tournament with a victory tomorrow.

In Junior C hockey, the Essex and Mooretown Flags played to a 1-1 tie.

In NFL news -- a person familiar with JJ Watt's condition says he has re-injured his back and the Texans expect him to be out until at least December -- it's possible he could miss the rest of the season.
