Hawks Could Be CK's Best

The CKSS Golden Hawks are hoping for nothing but an appearance in the senior girl's high school basketball final this year.

Characterized by superior speed and quickness at both ends of the floor, the Hawks are a perfect 3-0 to start the season. Coach Donna Kucera says they'll look to overwhelm opposing offences with a variety of defensive schemes.

"We will use a full court man. We have a varity of presses we'll go to, it usually depends on the matchup. So far when we've removed it it's about conditioning at the start of the season. We're not ready to do it for 32 minutes."

They have to do this, with size being a bit of an issue. Kucera adds this can be a liability, especially on the defensive end.

"What we want to take advantage of is moving the ball up the court quickly. We have a lot of speed and a lot of skill."

Despite CK only having to ever play them once a year, there's no doubt that every team in the league is relieved to see the John McGregor Panthers don't have a senior team this year. In a way, this makes the LKSSAA title up for grabs.

One of the key factors in getting the Hawks there could be Burke Bechard. After tearing her ACL, Bechard is playing her first year of high school ball, and making an impact. She's averaging 12 ppg so far this year.

"I've been coaching her since she was seven," says Kucera. "She's certainly got an instinct for the game, and meshes well with the other players on the team."

The next action for the Golden Hawks is October 6 against St. Clair OR October 12 against Northern Collegiate.
