UPDATE: Cause 'undetermined' after railroad tie fire in Chatham (VIDEO)

The cause is going down as undetermined after a large pile of railroad ties caught fire in Chatham Tuesday evening, sparking a massive blaze in the city.

Chatham-Kent fire officials said they were first called to the scene just after 5 p.m. Tuesday for reports of "significant amounts of black smoke" behind a warehouse on Colborne Street.

By the time firefighters arrived at the scene, the railroad ties were already engulfed in flames and additional personnel were called to help out.

Residents in the area of the fire were advised to close their windows and doors to protect themselves from the heavy black smoke that was coming from the fire.

At the peak of the incident, seven fire trucks and more than 40 firefighters were at the scene working to control the spread of the fire. Fire officials said there was some minimal exposure damage to the back of a warehouse near the scene, but there is no official damage estimate at this point. No injuries were reported.

Fire crews also brought in an excavator to help move the railroad ties.
