Alleged criminals keep K9 unit busy

Chatham-Kent police dog Arry is due for some treats after helping officers to track down five suspects in connection with two different investigations.

Officers said the first chase started at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, when officers on general patrol tried to pull over a vehicle on Harvey Street in Chatham.

Police said instead of stopping, the vehicle they were pursuing allegedly fled from the scene, almost hitting one of the officers in the process.

Investigators said they were able to find the vehicle a short time later, but no one was inside -- the occupants had reportedly fled on foot.

Officers called in the K9 unit, and with the help of police dog Arry, they were able to track down two suspects and arrested them both.

A 24-year-old Lakeshore man is charged with one count of dangerous driving, one count of flight from police, one count of obstructing police, and four counts of drug trafficking.

A 25-year-old Tecumseh man is charged with four counts of drug trafficking.

In the second case, police arrested three people accused of fleeing from police in the Blenheim area at around 2:40 a.m. on Monday.

Police said the three suspects were in a vehicle that sped away after an officer on general patrol tried to initiate a traffic stop, adding officers called off their pursuit for safety reasons.

A short time after that, police got a report from someone who said the vehicle they were looking for pulled into a private laneway in the Rondeau-area, at which point, all three occupants got out.

Officers headed to the scene, set up a containment perimeter, called in Arry again, were able to find three suspects, and arrested them.

As a result of the police investigation, a 39-year-old Ridgetown man is charged with breaching his release condition and possession of break-in tools, a 33-year-old Chatham woman is charged with possession of stolen property, and a 29-year-old Chatham woman is charged with drug possession.
