Truck driver facing impaired driving charges

A truck driver from the Toronto area has been charged with operating his rig while impaired.

Ontario Provincial Police say they received a call from a driver on Highway 401 near Duart Rd. at about 8:45 p.m. Thursday. The caller told police that an eastbound tractor trailer was swerving in its lane, then it suddenly entered the south ditch, causing it to roll on its side.

Fire crews extracted the driver from the truck and took him to hospital with minor injuries. An open bottle of liquor was found in the cab. While the driver was being interviewed by an officer, the officer determined that he had been drinking and a breath sample was obtained at the hospital.

The driver, identified as Christopher Byrd, 26, of Scarborough, has been charged with driving a motor vehicle with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood, and driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor.

The accused is required to appear in court in mid-October. These charges have yet to be proven in court.
