UPDATE: Highway 401 lane restriction extended until Friday afternoon

The westbound Highway 401 near Highgate is expected to be down to one lane of traffic until "sometime late Friday afternoon" after a fiery crash involving multiple transport trucks.

That's the latest word from the Ministry of Transportation as of 10 a.m. Thursday morning.

Provincial police closed the westbound lanes at Orford Road following the crash, which happened just before a construction zone near Kenesserie Road around 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

Police said the driver of a westbound tractor trailer rear-ended another tractor trailer, which crashed into a third tractor trailer, which then hit another vehicle. The first two transport trucks caught on fire as a result of the crash.

One of the truck drivers suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Charges are pending against the driver of the first transport truck.

The westbound lanes remained closed for several hours but police were able to reopen one lane to traffic around 11:30 p.m., however, the right lane and shoulder of the highway remained closed.
