Campers Learn How To Stay Safe On More Than Just The Farm

Campers got an up close and personal look at what emergency service members go through when attending a crash.

The fifth annual Farm Safety Day took place at the Chatham-Kent Children's Safety Village on Wednesday and kids sure got a treat.

The theme this year was ATVs and EMS, firefighters and police reenacted the procedure when attending a crash.

Safety Village Board President Gary Patterson said kids in rural areas like CK need to be taught how to safely deal with what they're exposed to.

"We have so many accidents and potential accidents in Chatham-Kent," Patterson said. "We have a such a great rural community and want to make sure all the kids are safe. We teach adults things as well. They'll come and learn things too."

Patterson added the day isn't just about teaching kids to be safe around machinery. He said the camp teaches kids how to be safe around animals and wildlife.

"We have honeybees here to teach the campers about conservation and being a good steward," Patterson said.

He added it is great to teach kids when they are young because they are like sponges and soak up all the knowledge they can.

Patterson said there is programming starting in September for first graders to teach them how to drive.

"The kids come in and ride the little gators with the Chatham-Kent police and learn the rules of the road," Patterson said. "They get to see what the road signs mean and understand Elmer's Safety Rules. They have to go over the railroad tracks and stop at stop signs. They learn at a young age what to look for when mom and dad are driving."
