Buxton Homecoming In Its 95th Year

The Labour Day long weekend is coming up, which also means the annual Buxton Homecoming event is getting ready to launch into its 95th year.

Shannon Prince, event organizer and curator for the Buxton Museum, says Homecoming kicks off on Friday with events planned throughout the weekend. This year's theme is "my roots are in Buxton".

"A lot of people that weekend will be coming back to trace their roots so that sets the tone," she says.

Homecoming will feature a lot of familiar programs seen in past years, such as the history conference, baseball games, and a church service. However, this year there's a slight twist with the church service.

"Sunday afternoon is our church service, which is at 3pm but this year we're going to be hosting our reenactment in the church," says Prince. "It's the 'Church Throughout The Years,' and I think it's very timely with what is happening right now with our church situation."

The North Buxton Community Church congregation recently filed a lawsuit against the British Methodist Episcopal Church of Canada, regarding a dispute over ownership.

Buxton Homecoming has proven to be very successful in the community in terms of turnout. Prince says although it takes a lot of planning and work to hold a four-day event, it's a fun time for everyone.

"I tell people it's really hard to explain unless you have experienced it," she says. "It's one of those big family reunion-feels in a small community."
