Epp Wants To Bring An Agricultural Voice To Ottawa

A local resident with extensive knowledge in the agricultural sector is trying something new by stepping into federal politics.

David Epp, president of Lycoland Farms and a third-generation farmer, has announced his intention of seeking the Conservative Party of Canada nomination for the Chatham-Kent-Leamington riding.

Epp says his knowledge in the field could serve as an asset in Ottawa.

"Agriculture and the agri-food industry has been identified as a major economic driver," says Epp. "Canada is putting more and more emphasis into that field, yet when you look across the House of Commons there aren't that many members that are focussed in that area -- that's something I can bring expertise to."

By potentially acting as a voice for other farmers in the area, Epp says he would want to address taxation and trade issues if successful in his bid.

"We deal daily as organizations with issues around access to crop protection products, we deal with issues around trade, and certainly our relationship with our neighbour to the south is very important to us and that needs addressing," he says.

Although Epp admits venturing into federal politics is new for him, he does have experience in serving on the Committee of Adjustment with the Municipality of Leamington. Epp also has experience in working with contracts, negotiations, and representing farmers on a provincial and international level.

"Chatham-Kent-Leamington is such an agricultural powerhouse and too often that voice is not heard in Ottawa," he says.

More information about Epp can be found on his website.

Four people are now running for the Conservative Party nomination. Current MP Dave Van Kesteren had previously stated that he plans on retiring once his term is up. Other candidates seeking the nomination include Chatham-Kent Councillor David VanDamme, business owner Toyin Crandell, and Tim Hortons franchise owner Mike Grail.
