Traffic Stop Nets A Pair in Chatham

Two people are charged with a wide range of offences after their vehicle was pulled over in Chatham.

Police say the investigation started when an officer on general patrol stopped a vehicle at around 11:30am Monday on Queen St.

At that time, the officer allegedly confirmed the driver's licence was suspended, so he was arrested.

A search of the man then allegedly turned up some ID and some credit cards that were from a wallet that had been reported stolen earlier in July. Police say that violates one of the man's release conditions because he was ordered not to have any bank cards on him that aren't in his name.

As a result of the investigation, police have charged a 34-year-old Chatham man with possession of stolen property and failing to comply with his release conditions. He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

During that same traffic stop, police say they arrested the 40-year-old woman who was sitting in the passenger seat and charged her with drug trafficking.

Officers say they searched the woman's purse after detecting a strong smell of marijuana coming from her side of the vehicle.

Inside that purse, police allegedly found various drugs including methamphetamine, cocaine, fentanyl, heroin, and hydromorphone. The woman also allegedly had a digital scale, some clear plastic bas, some glass pipes, and some cash with her.

She's now charged with five counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking and is being held in custody pending a bail hearing.
