A 17-year-old boy is finding out the hard way that you need to have your boating licence on you if you're out on the water.

Chatham-Kent OPP say a teen they stopped on Lake St. Clair at around 5pm Sunday didn't have a valid Pleasure Craft Operators Card on him, so they charged him.

OPP say proof of competency is required for all types of motorized boats, no matter their size or horsepower of the engine -- even small boats with electric motors.
