Fibre Internet Survey Underway

The municipality wants to know if local businesses need faster Internet.

Economic Development is currently running a survey to see which companies need or want fibre Internet.

"As we continue to move on and technology continues to improve, they require direct fibre or a better quality fibre connection," says Stuart McFadden, acting director of economic development services. "That's hence the reason as to why we're going about this process right now. We know that people have Internet service, but also we know that people have service that's inadequate."

McFadden says they want to hear from all types of businesses.

"We get phone calls and one-offs saying, 'My Internet service isn't adequate enough, I need to move larger files and I need to upgrade.' Well if we can find many companies in a certain area that have that same problem, then we'll know, maybe that's where we need to start."

The survey closes next Thursday, July 19.

"We're going to take the survey results, we will identify all those companies that give us that information, and then we will plot that on GIS," says McFadden. "So we can see on a map if we can create clusters or if we can find areas that are very deficient right now, then that will help us understand where we need to deploy first."

Fibre Internet is currently being installed in some areas in Chatham this summer.
