Some Relief Is On The Way

As surprising as it sounds, no temperature records were broken over the long weekend in Southwestern Ontario.

"If we take a look at the individual temperatures for the weekend from Friday to Monday, we were basically looking at the low 30s in terms of temperatures," says Environment Canada Meteorologist Gerald Cheng. "But there were older records that were even warmer. 34.9 C for example for Sunday, July 1, Canada Day, that was set back in 2002."

Cheng says the humidity is making it feel even hotter.

"It's relentless, hasn't it been? It's really all due to this air mass that's coming in from the Gulf of Mexico, and it's staying with us until Thursday," he says. "So you're really looking at a full week of really hot and humid weather."

However, some relief is on the way.

"A cold front is going to come Thursday night, and that will drop our temperatures back to more normal ones, especially for this weekend," says Cheng. "So, at least a bit of a break from this intense heat that we've been experiencing."

Cheng says it will still be hot, but not as stifling. He says the last extended heat wave that baked the area was about seven years ago.

"The most recent one was back in 2011," says Cheng. "[It was] around mid-July until the end of July and that lasted ten days of 30 C and above."
