Home Owner Has Close Call With Fire (VIDEO)

A Wallaceburg resident is left with questions after someone started a fire at his home, but he admits it could have been a lot worse.

Daniel Poirier took to social media after someone threw what appears on video to be a molotov cocktail at his house on June 16.

"As [police] were cleaning up they found a broken bottle with something shoved in the top so it does look like what I would call a molotov cocktail," says Poirier.

However, police say they can't confirm what exactly sparked the fire at this time.

Chatham-Kent police say the fire on Book St. happened just before 5am Saturday morning. Poirier says he was asleep at the time and only woke up after he heard tapping on his window.

"I look out [the window] and I see a reddish glow and there's a gentleman standing in my driveway yelling at me to get out because my house is on fire," he says.

Poirier says if his neighbour had not woken him up and called for help, things might have turned out differently.

"The other side of that wall is actually [where] the headboard is for my bedroom, and I was fast asleep at this time," says Poirier. "I don't think I would have made it if [my neighbour] didn't come wake me up. He's actually a hero in my opinion."

According to police, damage to Poirier's house is estimated at $2,000. He says he has no idea why someone would light his house on fire, adding at this point it's a "waiting game" to see if an arrest is made.

"It was a reckless act. I could have been seriously hurt," he says. "Should this happen to somebody else's house, they could be seriously hurt."

Police are still investigating the blaze. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Costable Taylor at miketa@chatham-kent.ca.  Anonymous callers may also call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
