Charges Laid After Stolen Audi Crashes Into Dumpster

Getting drunk and high before you get behind the wheel is a bad idea -- but it's even worse if you're driving a stolen car and then run it into a dumpster.

Chatham-Kent police say that's what happened at around 2am Thursday in a parking lot on St. Clair St. in Chatham.

Officers say they got a call about a vehicle hitting a dumpster and a large blue waste bin early Thursday morning and when they arrived at the scene, they found a damaged 2013 Audi sedan.

Police say after speaking with the driver, they believed he was under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Officers say further tests at police headquarters showed the man was impaired by alcohol, an antidepressant, and cannabis.

After investigating further, police say they learned that the vehicle the man was driving was stolen from a residence in Chatham and that there was some damage to another vehicle parked in the driveway.

Officers say they also allegedly found several items in the man's possession that were stolen from the garage at the residence.

A 21-year-old man is now charged with impaired driving, break and enter, theft of a motor vehicle, mischief, and two counts of possession of stolen property. He's being held in custody pending a bail hearing.
