In honour of Community Living Month, dozens of Chatham-Kent residents attended a flag raising ceremony at the Civic Centre.

Community Living Chatham-Kent Executive Director Ron Coristine says the turnout was great for the flag raising and barbecue event on Tuesday morning.

"It's a wonderful turnout every year, but when the sun is shining, it's that much better," says Coristine. "We couldn't ask for better weather."

Coristine says the flag, which will be on display at the Civic Centre throughout the month of May, is all about recognizing what people with intellectual disabilities bring to their communities.

"It's a month to celebrate all people's abilities, skills, talents, and gifts, and to recognize that every person is a valued citizen," he says.

Three awards were also presented at the event. The recipients of this year's Joyce M. Carr Champion Award were Tilbury Foodland owners Merrick and Denise McCall. Renee Cadotte and Chad Caron were the recipients of this year's Rob McLandress Make a Dream Come True Fund awards.

Coristine says there is a Boston Pizza fundraiser scheduled for Thursday that residents can attend. A full list of Community Living Month events can be found on BlackburnNewsCK.com.
