Several Residents Ready To Run For CK Council

The first week for people to file their nomination papers to run in the upcoming municipal election has come to an end. However, several weeks still remain.

The nomination period for the municipal election kicked off on Tuesday. Those pondering the idea of throwing their hat into the ring have until July 27.

Here is a list of candidates who have filed their papers as of May 4:

Ward 2 - South Kent

  • Frank Vercouteren (current councillor)
  • Henry Svec
Ward 3 - East Kent
  • David VanDamme (current councillor)
Ward 5 - Wallaceburg
  • Carmen McGregor (current councillor)
  • Nicolas Cadotte
Ward 6 - Chatham
  • Chris June
  • Kirk Hooker
  • Karen Kirkwood-Whyte
Current councillors Mark Authier, Trevor Thompson, Steve Pinsonneault, Michael Bondy, and Douglas Sulman had previously told Blackburn News that they plan on running for council again. However, they have not filed papers yet.

So far, Robert (Bob) Demers is the only person to file his papers for the role of trustee.

As for mayoral candidates, Councillor Darrin Canniff and local advocate Alysson Storey are the only two to file their nomination papers so far. Mayor Randy Hope says he will be running for re-election, however, he says he won't file his papers until after the provincial election.

Chatham-Kent’s municipal election will be held on October 22.
