Nearly 90 Drivers Stopped in Chatham Construction Zone

Chatham-Kent police say 87 drivers have been charged with making an illegal turn at a construction area in Chatham.

Water main and sewer line construction work started on April 16, at Grand Ave. W and Lacroix St. construction in the area is expected to last until June 29.

The traffic unit with Chatham-Kent Police Services made the construction area their post for this week.

Officers say even though there are signs in the area directing people to not turn at the intersection, some drivers chose to ignore them.

As a result, those drivers were stopped and later charged.

"Officers directed their attention to this area to first and foremost ensure the safety and well-being of the construction workers, and secondly to assist in maintaining the flow of traffic," says Traffic Sergeant Matt Stezycki. "We will continue to monitor the area."

Police are reminding drivers to pay attention and obey construction signs posted in the area.
