Several Drivers Charged With Offences On Hwy. 401

The spring weather appears to have brought out some stunt drivers over the weekend.

Chatham-Kent OPP were stationed along Hwy. 401 with radar equipment to catch anyone going excessively over the limit.

In one case, OPP say a vehicle was clocked going over 150 km/hr on Hwy. 401 near Communication Rd. at around 1:45am on Monday. A 28-year-old man from Michigan has been charged with racing a motor vehicle with excessive speed.

On Sunday around 9:45pm, a vehicle was stopped on the highway near Kent Bridge Rd. after it was clocked going over 150 km/hr. Officers pulled over a 21-year-old man from Mississauga. He has since been charged with racing a motor vehicle.

A 22-year-old Windsor man will also have to answer to a racing charge. Chatham-Kent OPP say a vehicle registered as going over 160 km/hr on Hwy. 401 near Merlin Rd., around 1am on Sunday.

On Saturday night, an Aurora man was caught going over 170 km/hr on Hwy. 401. OPP say the 20-year-old was allegedly speeding on the highway near Scane Rd., around 7:30pm.

All of the drivers listed above will have to go to court May 30. In addition, their drivers' licences have been suspended and their vehicles have been impounded for a week.

As a result of several speeding cases over the weekend, OPP are once again reminding driver that there are penalties for driving 50 km/hr or more over the speed limit.

Chatham-Kent OPP are also keeping an eye on the other major traffic offences. Officers stopped a vehicle Friday night around 12:45pm on Hwy. 401 near Merlin Rd. It didn't take long for police to find out that the person behind the wheel was suspended from driving. As a result, a 44-years-old man from Oakville was charged with driving while under suspension, and failing to move into another lane for an emergency vehicle.
