CK Trying To End Homelessness

Chatham-Kent is taking part in a historic event this week.

More than 80 volunteers and staff will be meeting and counting local homeless people to help them get off the streets and into a home.

Ontario's homeless enumeration is the first province-wide count of its kind in Canada.

The municipality says the idea is to get to know every homeless person by name and assess their needs and vulnerability.

Those who are homeless and want to register can also complete a survey by calling 519-351-1228 ext. 2052 Tuesday and Wednesday from 8:30am to 4pm.

This project to end homelessness is connected to the national 20,000 Homes Campaign and includes a commitment to house the most vulnerable homeless in our community by 2020.

“Ending homelessness is not easy, but the 20,000 Homes research tells us it is possible. The first step is knowing, by name, who in our community is homeless, and what their specific needs are,” says Chantal Perry, Program Manager with Employment and Social Services. “Once we know who is homeless, we can help them find housing.”

Results and data will be shared at an information session on May 16 but a time and location have yet to be announced.
