South Kent Councillor Wants To Hear From OPP

A South Kent councillor is hoping to hear from Chatham-Kent OPP in an upcoming meeting, but before that can happen, he needs the green light from the rest of council.

Councillor Frank Vercouteren will be bringing a motion to the floor Monday night, to have local OPP give a presentation.

"I have never heard anybody talk about OPP regarding their services, what they do, what we expect from them, what services they offer us, and how they help Chatham-Kent," he says. "I thought this is a good opportunity for them to speak out [and] let us know what's going on."

The idea of having OPP give a presentation during a council meeting is not new. Vercouteren says he brought the motion to council in the past, but it came back in a tied vote.

"I can understand that council maybe felt there were other things going on but that's not it," he says. "I thought this is an opportunity for us to hear from [OPP] and I'm hoping council will support that."

Vercouteren says he has been talking with OPP about the possibility of giving a presentation and says they're happy to do so, free of charge.

"I think they're great supporters of our own police force, I think they work together well, I don't have any complaints that way," he says. "But I think as councillor, I would really like to show our respect and let them make a presentation."

Vercouteren adds although most residents have a general idea of what OPP do, there are still a lot of tasks that go unnoticed or unknown.

Council's meeting is scheduled to take place at 6pm at the Civic Centre in Chatham.
