Emergency Crews Show Support For Donor Initiative

Local emergency responders will be sporting green ribbons on their uniforms this April as part of "Be a Donor" month.

The "Green Ribbon Campaign", which is known in other areas of the province as "Give the Gift of Life" campaign, works to raise awareness for the need for organ and tissue donors.

"Despite significant progress, there are still over 1,500 Ontarians on the waiting list for a life-saving organ transplant," the Chatham-Kent Police Service said in a news release.

As stated in the release, local police started taking part in the campaign when Bailey Cowell -- whose parents are both officers in Chatham-Kent -- passed away in 2001 following a heart transplant.

To show support for the Cowell family and the campaign itself, Chatham-Kent police, firefighters and EMS are standing together by displaying green ribbons. In addition to wearing the ribbons, the symbols can be seen at the side of all municipal emergency vehicles.

To support the campaign by becoming a donor, residents are encouraged to visit beadonor.ca/ckha to register.
