SIU Investigating Chatham Woman’s Arrest

Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after a Chatham woman was injured while being arrested by police.

On Sunday at around 12am, Chatham-Kent OPP stopped a vehicle on Park Ave. E in Chatham.

Police say the female driver was arrested. During the interaction, the woman was injured and taken to the hospital where she was treated and released into police custody.

A 24-year-old woman from Chatham has been charged with the following Criminal Code offences:

  • Failure or refusal to provide a sample
  • Resisting a peace officer
  • Assaulting a peace officer
  • Fleeing while being pursued by a peace officer
  • Obstructing a peace officer

The woman is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on April 4 to answer to the charges.

The OPP has notified the province’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU), which has invoked its mandate. The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates incidents involving police in which there has been death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.

As a result, the OPP will not be able to provide any further information. Any other inquiries should be directed to SIU Communications at (416) 622-2342.
