A provincial police officer had to be taken to hospital after being struck by a vehicle on Hwy. 401 in Chatham.

The Ontario Provincial Police say on Wednesday around 9:45am, officers were investigating a separate collision on the highway near Merlin Rd. when a westbound vehicle lost control, entered the ditch and hit the officer.

The officer was taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

As a result of the crash, a 49-year-old New Hamburg man has been charged with careless driving.

The highway was temporarily closed while the OPP conducted an investigation and to allow for removal of the vehicle.
