Monday Weather Clipper A 'Snowmaker'

You could have a very interesting drive home Monday afternoon.

Environment Canada is tracking what could be the first significant snowfall of the season. A special weather statement remains in effect for the entire region through early Tuesday morning.

Though chances of a snowfall warning are slim as of Sunday night, Environment Canada severe weather specialist Rob Kuhn says that the temperature could affect the amount of snow we get.

"Temperatures are quite cold, this system is going to be a snowmaker," says Kuhn.

Forecasters say this Alberta clipper, which has been moving toward the Great Lakes region for a couple of days, will start to dump snow on the area during the day Monday and continue into the evening hours. This could make the afternoon commute slow and slippery.

Kuhn says there will be a good amount of snow falling, but nothing catastrophic.

"We're looking at a general snowfall of probably about 5 cm to 10 cm for most and with a few areas getting 10 cm to maybe 15 cm when this thing is all said and done," says Kuhn.

Kuhn says Alberta clippers like this one don't tend to bring major amounts of snow since they form over the Rocky Mountains far from the moisture along Canada's west coast, and though they move quickly, snowfall can occur over a widespread area.
