New Governance Model At CKHA Gaining Traction

There's some interest already in joining the new board of directors of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA).

CKHA wants to have a single corporation and board to govern both the Chatham and Wallaceburg hospital sites.

Sheldon Parsons, former board chair of the Sydenham Hospital, says nobody wants to make anything public at the moment but admits there's some interest being shown by his colleagues in Wallaceburg.

"It's going to be a significant responsibility for the people who put their names forward and want to serve in this way," says Parsons.

The integration replaces three boards and will have twelve directors; one from each of the six wards, one from the First Nations community, and five at large to ensure proper representation of Wallaceburg and other rural communities.  The first board meeting is tentatively scheduled for the end of February.

Parsons is not sure whether any of his colleagues will put their names forward but says their decisions will be made over the next few weeks.

"It will be a very robust process that they go through before they name the final board going forward and I'm sure there's going to be significant training of those individuals," Parsons says.

He says former board members are not disqualified from applying.

"We do believe that there needs to be some strong voices come forward from across Chatham-Kent to make sure that health care continues to get delivered in the way that we expect it," says Parsons.
