CKHA Plans Redevelopment Of Chatham And Sydenham Campuses

The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) has come up with a plan of how it wants to redevelop its Chatham and Sydenham Campuses over the next 15 to 20 years.

According to a news release, the redevelopment plan will focus on the renewal of CKHA's aging hospital buildings in Chatham and Wallaceburg.

"Our aging buildings are reaching a critical stage making it imperative that we address these urgent needs to continue the delivery of high quality care to our patients and their families," says CKHA President and CEO Lori Marshall. "These redevelopment plans will address our high priority infrastructure needs. An updated and modernized environment will equip our staff and physicians with the tools to deliver efficient and safe care into the future."

The news release states that Wallaceburg's Sydenham Campus and Chatham's Public General Hospital wing are close to the end of their life expectancies, as outlined by Ministry of Health and Long Term Care's facility condition assessments. According to the release, the redevelopment of both sites will modernize healthcare delivery, ensure safety, and improve the overall patient experience.

"A patient-focused, fiscally responsible development plan solidifies CKHA's vision for a two site hospital system for Chatham-Kent," says CKHA Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Jerome Quenneville. "These plans are our desired next steps. Implementing them in practical and affordable stages will ensure we reach our long-term vision of sustainable healthcare delivery for the community."

According to the release, redevelopment plans for CKHA's Sydenham Campus will focus on the following services:

  • 24-hour emergency department
  • Five inpatient beds in the emergency department
  • Ambulatory care, including specialty clinics
  • Diagnostic imaging, including radiology and ultrasound
  • Respiratory therapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Laboratory services
The Chatham Campus will focus on priority areas, including:
  • Ambulatory care
  • Medical day care
  • Inpatient mental health and addictions
  • Medical inpatient units
  • The pharmacy
  • Medical device reprocessing
  • Emergency department
  • Surgical suite
The CKHA's Board of Directors, the Local Health Integration Network, and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) are in support of these redevelopment projects.
