CK Arenas Getting Healthier Food

Healthier food options will soon be available in a couple of arenas in Chatham-Kent.

The Fuel Up! pilot program launches Saturday, November 4 at the arena in Blenheim and Saturday, November 11 in Tilbury.

"I think our biggest, and hopefully our best seller, will be our new smoothies," says Rob Veccia, Supervisor at Tilbury Memorial Arena. "They will include all kinds of frozen vegetables and fruits, and also some yogurts, some granola. Some fresh fruit as well, bananas and apples."

Veccia says they want to give people more choices at the arena.

"We're trending towards getting healthier food and healthier choices. With this opportunity we're going to be able to provide, not only the really good stuff, but still some of the bad stuff, just in case," he says.

For every six healthy items you purchase, you will receive a water bottle.

Public Health Dietitian Lyndsay Davidson has high hopes the pilot project will go well.

"We surveyed the community and they told us what they wanted," says Davidson. "They spoke up and said that they did want healthier choices in the arenas. So if they support it, then the plan is that over time, we'll be able to get it out to more arenas."

The program is in partnership with the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit, and Super Kids CK.
