OMAFRA Commemorates Canada's 150th With Signs

Residents only have a few more days to apply for a commemorative sign celebrating Canada's 150th.

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) is taking applications from individuals or groups, that have been affiliated with the agricultural sector for the past 150 years.

Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Jeff Leal says applicants have until the end of the month to submit an application.

"It's really the province of Ontario's way of thanking the farm communities -- people that have been on the land for 150 years," says Leal.

He says in order to receive a 150th commemorative sign, applicants have to meet certain qualifications that would prove that the land, person, or group has in fact had agricultural ties for the past 150 years.

"We've had a great response. More than 600 applications have been received to date, and that's about 25 per day," he says. "I'm pleased to say that we have 60 applications now from the wonderful agricultural area of Chatham-Kent."

Leal adds the whole idea to have the 150th signs came from his tours through the rural sectors and seeing similar signs.

"From time to time I would see one of the farm signs that were put in place -- the century farm signs, recognizing a farm that has been in production, [with] same ownership for a 100 years that we celebrated in Canad's centennial year of 1967," he says.

Applications will be accepted until the end of the day on October 31.
