Residents Along Erie Shore Warned About Flooding

Chatham-Kent EMS members and volunteer firefighters are taking precautions in case shoreline flooding leads to an evacuation along Erie Shore Dr.

The group was canvassing homes along Erie Shore Dr. and Dyke Rd. south of Blenheim on Tuesday afternoon to collect emergency contact information from residents in case of an evacuation alert. Residents were also asked if they have a safe place to stay and if they would be in need of assistance, if an evacuation took place.  They were also advised to bring any required medications.

According to the municipality, there are about 100 residences along the road.

The municipality also reported that Erie Shore Dr. between Erieau Rd. and Bisnett Line was closed Tuesday afternoon due to flooding.

Chatham-Kent CAO Don Shropshire says the canvassing was only a precautionary measure.

“We aren’t anticipating an evacuation, however, we are aware that prolonged flooding could jeopardize the integrity of the roadway and potentially make that a necessity,” he says.

Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority issued an alert Monday morning, calling for strong winds on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday morning that may cause high waves. The conservation authority says the waves will be similar to those that caused flooding earlier this year along Erie Shore Dr. in Chatham-Kent.

LTVCA says there is a risk that wave action could damage the shoreline and cause erosion. The conservation authority adds that people, pets, and livestock should avoid the shoreline.

The flood watch is in effect until Thursday.
