Santa Taking A Different Route In Chatham

Santa Claus will be coming to Chatham in less than a month.

The Chatham Santa Claus parade is set for Friday, November 17, but because of construction, the route is a little different.

"This year it won't be starting on Sandys St. It will be staged on Thames and Dover, just across the river," says Connie Beneteau, project coordinator for the Historic Downtown Chatham BIA. "It will come over the Third St. Bridge, come down King St. all the way to the WISH Centre, and end at the WISH Centre like it usually does."

The parade will also start a little later this year, at 6:30pm.

"The route itself is shorter, however, if I've got 75 floats like they did last year, it's still going to take two hours for all the floats to get through," says Beneteau. "So it will be shorter for the people walking it, but it will be the same duration for the people watching it."

Beneteau says they're also a little behind schedule.

"We were looking for anyone to take on the parade, and because none of the groups, because it is a lot of work," she says. "I took it on and the route had to be confirmed by the municipality, the engineering, the police. Everything's a little bit behind schedule, so the parade applications just started going out last week."
