Jr. Hockey Wrap-Up - October 7, 2017

The Leamington Flyers scored early and held on to beat the Strathroy Rockets 3-1 Saturday night at West Middlesex Memorial Arena.

Leamington remains first in the GOJHL Western Conference with 18 points and a 9-1 record so far.

Preston Corp scored the only goal of the first period for a 1-0 Leamington lead. The Flyers added a goal in the second period on an unassisted, short-handed goal by Josh Pope-Ferguson. The Rockets scored later in the period on a Cameron Rombouts lamplighter and the Flyers held a 2-1 lead after two frames.

Bryce O'Brien provided an insurance goal in the third period for Leamington.

Noah Hedrick had 40 stops for the Flyers in goal. Zach Weir also had 40 saves but took the loss for Strathroy.

The Flyers travel to LaSalle Wednesday night to face the Vipers, while Strathroy takes on Leamington again at the Libro Centre Thursday.

Steve McDonald scored twice as the Wheatley Omstead Sharks beat the Dresden Kings 5-1.

The Kings drew first blood just 49 seconds into the first period when Brantly Kuipers scored. After that it was all Sharks. Dawson Iles and Carter Mastronardi scored goals that gave Wheatley the tie, then a permanent lead. There were no penalties in the first.

Wheatley picked up two more goals in the second period from Cameron Cronheimer and McDonald's first score of the game, putting the Sharks up 4-1 after two periods. McDonald sealed things in the third with his second goal.

Daniel Tonietto stopped all but one of Dresden's 28 shots in goal for Wheatley, while Cody Hitchcock had 31 saves out of 35 tries for the Kings.

The Sharks host Amherstburg in a Thanksgiving Monday tussle. Dresden travels to Lakeshore Thursday.

Four straight goals by the Mooretown Flags was plenty in their 6-1 win over the Petrolia Flyers at Mooretown Arena.

The Flags put their first two up in the first frame, with Ryan Lyle and Nolan Farr providing the scoring. Mooretown doubled that lead before the ninth minute of the second period with goals from Nolan Riley and Kyle Smith. Petrolia cracked the scoreboard at 13:08 in the middle period on a goal by Nick Burgess, though Joe Correia got that goal back with 58 seconds left before the intermission.

Joe Stock nailed down the victory for the Flags at 56 seconds left in the third period.

Nolan Hakr started the game in goal for Mooretown and got 30 saves out of 31 attempts, then Jake Wilkins took over and stopped three more Petrolia shots. Jakob Knowles had 32 saves in the Flyers' loss.

The Flags host Blenheim on October 14 while Petrolia welcomes Amherstburg Thursday.
