Networking Workshop To Be Held In CK

The Goodwill Career Centre will host a free networking workshop for job seekers in Chatham on Wednesday.

Director of Workforce Development Michelle Repuski says anyone can attend the session on Wednesday from 1pm to 3pm at the career centre to learn more about using networking to your advantage to find a job.

"It's really about making the most of your connections in the community and online [and] looking at identifying new connections, all in the activity of uncovering some new job leads and gaining an advantage in your job search," explains Repuski.

Repuski says, these days, networking is extremely important to finding a job.

"There's a lot of positions that are never advertised, certainly in today's economy. It's different than it was a few years ago. Getting a jump on what's happening in your community [and] what opportunities could exist before other people maybe looking for the same positions, it does give you a head start," Repuski says.

She says job searching is a lot different than it was in previous years, with new technologies and social media platforms constantly emerging.

"Employers do get a lot of their leads online. Going back just a few years ago, people really relied heavily on paper-based resumes and who they knew just within their own community. Certainly, there's so much activity that's going on in neighbouring communities where people are hearing things through social media," says Repuski.

Repuski says workshops on various topics are held every Wednesday from 1pm to 3pm at the Goodwill Career Centre in Chatham. She says topics range from "anything and everything that can help people tap into today's labour market."
