Thames River In Chatham Is Green Again

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority says blue-green algae has resurfaced in the Thames River in Chatham.

LTVCA staff noticed another discolouration by a bloom on Friday and are once again warning that people, pets, and livestock should not use, drink, bathe, or swim in the water because some varieties of this algae can produce toxins that are harmful to humans and animals.

Conservation officials say "the bloom seems to have spread over the weekend and now appears to be forming upstream in the Lower Thames through Middlesex and Elgin Counties, as well as having flowed downstream to the mouth of Lake St. Clair."

LTVCA says "the bloom doesn’t seem to be as severe as the one that occurred in late August, but this one seems to cover a larger area."
