Record Breaking Weekend

It was a record breaking weekend in Southwestern Ontario.

Environment Canada Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Geoff Coulson says Windsor set new weather records on both Saturday and Sunday.

"They got up to 31.4 C at the airport and that broke the previous record for September 23 of 30.6 C. And then on Sunday got up to 31.5 C at the airport, and that set a new record for the 24th."

But it wasn't a record both days in Chatham-Kent.

"On Saturday the site got up to 31.7 C, and that beat the old record of 31.1 C that was set back in 1936," says Coulson. "We came close on Sunday, got up to 30.7 C, but the current record of 31.1 C still stands, and that record was set back all the way in 1891."

Coulson says we could set some more records before it cools down.

"Records both on Tuesday and Wednesday could be at risk. We're forecasting a high on Tuesday of 31 C, current record for that date in history is 30.9 C. And a similar situation on Wednesday, the forecast high is 29 C and the current record for September 27 in the record books is 29.4 C."

Why is it so hot this late in September? Coulson says it's because a high pressure system has parked itself over the Great Lakes.

"Acting like a big heat pump, bringing northwards very warm and humid air from the Gulf of Mexico." he says. "It's also a very stable pattern, it's not going anywhere, it's parked itself there, and we've already had a number of days of the hot and humid weather, and we've got a few more days left to go."

Coulson says it's pretty rare for it to be this warm this late in September.

"I've been doing this for over 30 years, I've seen some warm September days, but not this type of stretch of weather. Not this many days in a row where consistently we're dealing with this type of heat and this type of humidity. This particular setup is pretty rare."
