CK Welcomes International Students

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent and local school boards are welcoming about 200 international students to the community this weekend.

On Saturday from 11am to 2pm at Kingston Park in Chatham, the municipality will be hosting a welcome event for new international students and their host families. According to a news release, about 200 international students are expected from countries around the world, including China, Dubai, Spain, Taiwan, India, and Belgium.

Jim Costello, who is the director of education at the Lambton Kent District School Board, says they currently have 130 students from all over the world attending the board's schools this year.

"We've had an international education initiative for over ten years in play, and this year, things have really grown and we have students from over 26 countries involved," says Costello."This is among the highest enrollment that we've ever seen from international education students."

Costello says he is beyond thrilled to have these students in the community.

"This is great for our board. It's great for our students. It enriches their classrooms and also, provides opportunities, in many cases, for our students to return to other countries, as we have a number of initiatives in play in Korea and Taiwan," he says.

More information about the International Student Welcome Event is available on the municipality's website. International students and their host families can RSVP or send questions to livingck@chatham-kent.ca.
