A Ton of Pork Going To CK Food Banks

To celebrate Agriculture Day in Chatham-Kent, the Kent Federation of Agriculture teamed up with Roesch Meats and More to package fresh pork for local food banks.

Agriculture Day, which kicked off on Tuesday, is the second theme day of the 12 Days of Positivity in Chatham-Kent. Roesch Meats and More staff, as well as members of the KFA, CK Councillor Darrin Canniff, and Captain Positive himself teamed up at the Roesch farm on Agriculture Day to package approximately one ton of meat. On Wednesday, the municipality celebrates Seniors Day.

KFA Director Mary Anne Udvari says annual food donations like these have been apart of their Food Freedom Day for the past three years. Food Freedom Day, which was hosted in February of this year, refers to the day when the average Canadian has earned enough money to pay for their groceries for the rest of the year.

She says helping package and donate the meat is the last portion of their fundraising pledge.

"We've actually asked the community to give us money and we have put all that money towards food. We've had some wonderful producers give us lots of donations, but in this case Roesch Meats and More," says Udvari.

Udvari says it's great to give back to households that cannot afford to put fresh meat and produce on their tables.

"They actually are so appreciative. We have so many farmers in the community and farm businesses that offer different types of food [and] produce. We're very grateful to do this for the community," she adds.

According to Udvari, the meat will be donated to Salvation Army and Outreach for Hunger.

There is also a variety of events happening on Seniors Day in Chatham-Kent. On Wednesday, the municipality will be hosting different events and activities in the community, including a bake sale and a movie showing. For more details and information, visit the full schedule of events online.
