Buxton Homecoming Back For Another Year

The 94th Annual Buxton Homecoming Celebration is getting ready to kick off for the Labour Day long weekend.

Shannon Prince, curator for the Buxton Museum, says the homecoming celebration started off as a one-day baseball game, but has since expanded to four days of activities.

"To me it's almost like a huge family reunion because now people that have moved away... it's almost like a pilgrimage," she says. "[People] have to come home Labour Day weekend because now it's so important for their family to know their history and their roots."

Buxton is of historical value as it was the last stop for hundreds of people who used the Underground Railroad. To teach people about that history, a conference will kick off the celebration on September 1 at 9am.

"Last year we didn't have [the conference] and now it's resurfaced, which is wonderful," says Prince. "One of the things about this year is they're going to be talking about the DNA because that is so very popular, so that's going to be one of the highlights of the history conference."

Prince says everything from live entertainment, bull riding, fireworks, and a parade are set to take place throughout the long weekend.
