Erie St Clair LHIN Plans To Address Health Gaps

The Erie St Clair Local Health Integration Network has some work to do when it comes to wait times and access to health care.

Both categories are below the provincial average and CEO Ralph Ganter says improvement is a priority in the plan for the coming year.

Ganter says there's no shortage of things to tackle including quicker rehab, home care and doctor follow-up for acute care patients.

"Flow of patients, ALC [alternate level of care] is something you'll see in there, mental health addictions is going to be very key, end of life is very key and the transition that we have with the CCAC home and community care making sure that we have better patient outcomes in each of our sub-regions," says Ganter.

People living in the Chatham, Windsor and Sarnia area are above the provincial average for obesity, heavy drinking, smoking, arthritis, diabetes and cancer and below the provincial average for physical activity, consumption of fruits and vegetables and asthma.

Ganter says addressing health gaps and improving patient outcomes will be the focus in 2017-2018.

"A lot of it is how do we make sure that we are progressing and improving. So, measurement, this concept of taking action, learning from it and moving from there. All key things that this plan hopefully speaks to," Ganter says.

Ganter says addressing the coming flu season is a top priority to avoid last year's overflow at hospitals.

"One of the activities that we have in there is surge planning. We know that we fell behind with respect to some of our wait times during flu season. So, how do we deal with it, let's address where the barrier is and then some of those numbers will change," says Ganter.
