Lack Of Bus Shelters A Concern In CK

A Chatham-Kent resident is trying to raise more awareness about the lack of bus shelters in the municipality.

Barbara Stewart, a regular bus-rider in Chatham-Kent, has many complaints about how few shelters there are in the area. She adds that many existing shelters are not disability-friendly.

"There are too few bus shelters and those that are accessible are not suitable for people with disability wheelchairs," explains Stewart.

Weather is also a concern for Stewart.

"When you do have the rain coming sporadically, there is nowhere to shelter from the elements," she adds.

Councillor Darrin Canniff says the municipality hears and recognizes all of Stewart's concerns.

"It's a real inconvenience when it's cold out and it's raining to stand outside for the bus. Certainly we need to look at convenient ways for people who use the busses to be sheltered," says Canniff.

Stewart says the municipality should look for outside help if money is the concern.

"I do know that there are people that will build the bus shelters. The city just has to accept the contract, or however they do it. The city doesn't even have to spend the money," explains Stewart.

Canniff says Stewart's suggestion is a possibility.

"Council is open to any and all funding. Whether it's coming from non-profit or any other source. Certainly we look at partnerships. If we could partner up with somebody that would be great," says Canniff.

Canniff says the lack of bus shelters is a recognized issue in the community that he is willing to explore.
